Let's Continue with our Story from Part -1
In this Article we will be discussing about the types of Dysmenorrhea.
There are two types of dysmenorrhea, Primary and Secondary .
Primary Dysmenorrhea refers to painful menses but absence of any Pelvic pathology. Also called as Spasmodic Dysmenorrhea usually present at 1st day of menses.
And Secondary Dysmenorrhea where the other pelvic pathology is involved and that causes Severe pain. The pathology means any disease like Endometriosis, Adenomyosis, Pelvic Inflammatory disease, Uterine fibroids, Ovarian Cyst. Any of these pathology might be the cause of pain. So here line of treatment changes here we need to rule out basic cause and treat it accordingly.

Here in this case of Rennie, who is a school going girl ,has just started on her periods. She might be a case of primary dysmenorrhoea.
Generally Girls are being told by her parents that Menstruation will be painful. Many of the times the intensity of pain during Menstruation is related to psychological and behavioral factors.
As we have seen Rennie was advised multiple things for her menstrual cramps, but the thing which she remembered is the pain relieving medication.

Many of us while suffering from any pain we just wish that some magic will happen and our pain will go. So we just naturally choose the pain relieving medication.
Once or twice or in extreme cases this pain relieving medication is a not a problem, but what if we incline to depend on some medication for such condition and that condition or pain can be relieved by some simple good habits.
Here Rinne started taking medication during her menstrual days. Months passed without any complaints.
There was this time During summer vacations Rinnie with her family went to native place. Rinne was enjoying her vacations. One fine evening she got her periods, this time she forgot to take her medicines with her and that place was extremly remote, There was no medical facility or pharmacy available in her periphery.
As usual Rennie was experiencing severe crampy pain. Radha called her doctor for advise. Doctor advised Hot water bag fomentation over lower back, abdomen, inner thigh. Rinnie felt little bit relaxed and she slept without having her dinner.

Here the role of preventive measures come, which is majority of times remains underrated.
As per Ayurveda , any kind of pain is always associated with dishormony of vata dosha.
न हि वातादृते योनि्नारीणां संप्रदूष्यति ।
शमयित्वा तमन्यस्य कुर्यात् दोपस्य भेषजम् ।
-च० चि० ३०-११५
As in all cases of dysmenorrhoea, Vātaprakopa is the main reason. So how does the vata dosha really gets imbalanced?
Basically, Apan Vayu is one of the type of vata dosha. It governs over the pelvic area. The functions like defecation (Passing stool), micturition ( passing urine), Menstruation are the under control of Apan Vayu.

All dosha can be kept in balance with healthy diet. As we have seen Rennie was having very bad diet habits. She was fond of junk food, and use to have it almost alternate days. This could be one of the reason of her painful cramps. Such junk food which doesn't digest easily and can cause constipation which ultimately affects harmony of Apan Vayu.
Second thing is her daily activities, practicing Yogasana and exercise boosts physical and psychological behaviour. Daily practice of yogasana may give certain amount of relief from Menstrual pain. Asanas like Bhadrasana, Pavanmuktasana, Bhujangasana, Shalabhasana , where the pelvic area is involved strenthens muscles of backbone, hip, buttock, thigh, helps to maintain Apan Vayu.
Diet and Exercise are the preventive measures for many diseases. It helps to improve threshold of pain tolerance. Menstruation is not a disease, but severe pain makes u feel sick unnecessarily. It is a physiological process . So practice asana and with little adaptation of our good food habits will definetly resolve your multiple pain problems.
Have a Happy and healthy menstruation.
